Nobody on the limb.
Nobody on the trees.
I feel it in the air.
The birds are out of reach…
Because it’s hot, y’all. Also, shout out to Don Henly for inspiring this ridiculous take on “Boys of Summer” aka “Birds of Summer”.
As we move into summer, amateur bird watchers – the pros already know this – may notice that their favorite birds have gone quiet. Well, if you want to see your favorites, you may have to get out a little earlier in the day. For the best birding, get outside at dawn and get ready to wrap it up around 11:00 AM.
For the best birding in Arkansas, check out some of these sites suggested by the Audubon Society.
LAKE FAYETTEVILLE
Lake Fayetteville, though smack in the middle of Fayetteville, Lake Fayetteville is home to 250 species. Spring migrants, songbirds, and waterfowl. And, because you’re in Fayetteville, you can easily do a morning of bird watching before hitting the shops or swinging by the botanical garden.
BALD KNOB WILDLIFE REFUGE
Established in old agricultural fields outside Bald Knob, AR, this refuge is intentionally left slightly muddy to attract birds of all kinds. Peregrine falcons swoop from the sky, wood storks hang out in the marsh, and nesting birds roost in the scrubby brush. Though relatively young in terms of refuges, Bald Knob Wildlife Refuge is on its way to becoming a birder’s paradise.
HOLLA BEND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Hardwood forest, wetlands, and scrubby fields in central Arkansas is the home of the Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge. Holla Bend is home to 270 species, including the Trumpeter Swan, which sounds like something from a Disney movie.
Remember your local Farmer’s Coop for bird seed and supplies. We can set you up so you’ll see the “Birds of Summer”, fall, and year round!
